For Americans, it's Independence Day, but as an independent publisher every day is independence day. There are so many negatives that go along with being small, I think it's a good idea to take a moment to remind ourselves of all the positives that also go along with being independent.

The number one positive thing about being an independent is obvious as I look around. I am writing this while I am enjoying a ride on a friend's boat. Beat that, Random House!

The other postive aspects of being an independent publisher include:

• Being able to choose the books I want to publish based on any criteria I want.

• Feeling pride in my accomplishments because they really are MY accomplishments.

• Loving what I do and doing what I love.
