Shades of Gray is a romance, but it is not a category romance. It is, instead, the sort of sweeping romantic fiction that asks the reader to look back to days gone by. Set in the American Civil War, it is the story of Andrea, a Union Army scout and sometime spy, and Alexander Hunter, a Confederate officer who is modeled on real life Confederate hero Colonel John S. Mosby, leader of Mosby's Rangers.

Anya Seton's Green Darkness was originally published by a major publisher in 1972. Although it went out of print, it remained so popular, the rights were purchased by an independent publisher, Chicago Review Press. It was reprinted in 2005.

Many of us have quite a clear picture of Arthur in our minds. We know what we would like him to look like, and often how we would like him to think. One of the reasons for us having such a clear conception of Arthur is how frequently the same concepts about him, his court, and his life story are repeated in modern fiction. Authors write what look like very different books, but under the surface many share strong similarities.

Patricia Wynn, a well known author, who has written popular Regency romances for Harlequin and Fawcett, struck out on her own a few years ago and founded Pemberley Press. I met her last summer at a convention, and I was amazed to find a successful author who had made the decision to enter the world of independent publishing.
